How do you actually know if a massage therapist is good?

Credentials are the floor, not the answer. Here's what actually separates a good RMT from an average one, and what's worth asking before you book.

Credentials are the floor, not the differentiator.

Every practising RMT in Ontario is registered with the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario and has completed accredited training. That's the baseline everyone clears. In my opinion, what actually makes a massage practice good is built on something simpler: trust.

If you develop real trust with your therapist when you meet them, a good working relationship tends to follow — and that relationship is what the rest of this is built on.

How a treatment plan actually gets built

It starts with your goals, not a script.

I start from what you're actually trying to get out of treatment, and build from there. We put together a plan that fits your capacity, the time you actually have, and what matters to you — whether that's rehab, relaxation, or supporting your training. Your goals set the direction, not a standard routine.

What actually happens at intake

Two very different sessions, both built the same way.

During the intake I'll ask what you're looking to get out of treatment, and we'll talk through a plan together. Say you come in wanting your low back pain managed: I'll help build your understanding of what's actually going on, answer any questions you have, and we might work through the glutes and quads and end with a couple of exercises to take away.

Say you come in wanting to relax instead: we'll set the lighting, put music on, bring in essential oils, and give you the space to actually wind down.

Either way, we touch base at the end — answer any questions, wrap up the treatment, and either build a plan for ongoing care or, if the issue's settled for now, send you on your way with an open invitation to come back whenever you'd like.
