How to Treat Myositis
Treatments you may want to discuss with your family doctor, nurse practitioner or specialist team
Tips
- Know everything you can about your illness. Don’t be afraid to ask questions.
- Be a part of the medical team. Consider everyone involved as a united front working to fight your disease. Make sure to stick to the treatment plan you have been given.
- Know what your limits are and when to say no.
- Rest whenever you start to feel tired. Don’t wait until you hit the point of exhaustion to do something about it.
- When dealing with an illness, acknowledge your emotions. Stay close to friends and family during this rough time.
Treatment
My Approach
Myositis is managed by your doctor and specialist team, and exercise is part of that plan. My aim is to support it: easing stiff, aching muscles and helping you build strength at a pace your body can handle. I work alongside your doctor and physiotherapist and follow their limits. If your weakness is severe or everyday tasks are a struggle, I'll check with your team before we start.
I assess how you move and the strength of your muscles, especially around the hips and shoulders, and check in at every visit, because myositis can change from week to week.
During a Flare
- Shorter, gentler sessions, avoiding the most inflamed areas
- Soothing massage, breathing and relaxation
- Easy joint movement through a comfortable range, and cool applications in the clinic if they help
