What It Is
Parkinson's disease is a progressive condition in which parts of the brain become damaged over many years (NHS, 2022a). More than 10 million people worldwide are estimated to be living with it (Parkinson's Foundation, n.d.). Parkinson's disease is commonly thought of as an illness of older people. However, around 4% of people with Parkinson's are diagnosed before the age of 50 (Parkinson's Foundation, n.d.).

My Approach
With Parkinson's, the muscles tend to stay switched on (rigidity) and the body gradually curls forward, stiffening the chest so breathing gets shallower. Your neurologist and care team lead on medicines and the overall plan. I work alongside them to ease stiffness, open up your posture, keep your ribs and spine moving and help you stay steady. After brain surgery, I need your surgeon's okay before hands-on treatment.
I assess your posture, how you walk and turn, your balance, and the movement and strength in your neck, back and hips. It's best to book sessions for times when your medication is working well, rather than during "off" periods.
Hands-On Treatment
- Slow, smooth, rhythmical work with pillows for support, never deep, rushed or forceful, since that can make rigidity worse
- Work on the front of the neck and the chest muscles that pull you forward (chest wall work only with your informed consent and a written consent form)
- Gentle shoulder movement to help bring back some arm swing, and gentle rib and spine mobilisation as you breathe out
- Easing areas that compensate, such as the low back and hips
